Ronys Torres is ready to “put on a show that the fans deserve!”
Ronys Torres (33-5, Nova Uniao, Brazil) will face Ermek Tlauov (12-2, Akhmat Asia, Kazakhstan) in the International Trials for the ROAD FC $1 Million Lightweight Tournament on February 11, 2017. Ahead of the match, he shared his thoughts on Korea and the Tournament, his strategy, and his motivation.
Torres is the top-ranked fighter in Brazil right now, and his violent finishes put the exclamation point on that. In his first 15 fights he ended 13 by knockouts and submissions against the likes of Diego Brandao and Adriano Martins with only one loss. This amazing record earned Torres a shot in the UFC in 2010.
Torres suffered contentious back to back decision losses against prime timers Melvin Guillard and Jacob Volkmann and was cut. Since then, he returned to Brazil and went on a massive recovery of 19-1 with a 75% finish rate, defeating Akbarh Arreola and Drew Fickett in the process. Torres claimed the Shooto Brasil title in 2013 and has held onto it since.
Torres says he knows why his previous overseas efforts were his only unsuccessful fights, and he's eager to start a new era,
“When I fought in UFC and WSOF, I knew I was an educated fighter, but I left in the hands of the judges. But no matter what, I should have shown that I can finish a fight every time, by knock out or submission. So I am very much focused now. I am a new fighter with a new mindset. I am 100% focused on the new phase of my career in ROAD FC.”
Torres does have the benefit of knowing many other Brazilians who have fought in Asia, including training partner and ROAD FC contender Marlon Sandro. He says fighting in Korea has been a topic of conversation, and he's prepared for it,
“Marlon Sandro has told me about ROAD FC and fighting in Korea and Asia. Actually, fighting in Korea is my dream come true! I am so happy I can have this opportunity to come to Korea. My Coach Dede has many fighters go overseas, he tells me to enjoy this journey and do my best.”
Torres feels he already has experience to deal with the fast pace of the tournament and he has a strategy, including for his first opponent,
“In one year, I fought 11 times. The ROAD FC tournament won't be a problem. I will keep training, keep working, and finish every fight quickly. I have studied my first opponent Ermek. I think he is very strong and of course he has a good guillotine. But my jiu jitsu is the best. I train with the best. I can surprise him on the ground.”
In conclusion, Torres shares what the ROAD FC Tournament means to him, and hat he will return to the fans,
“I know the ROAD FC $1 Million Tournament is going to make the whole world look at Korea. So that's why I am coming to Korea. This Tournament is wonderful for MMA and fighters, I am so happy to be in it. I am motivated to win for God, for Brasil, for my family, my 3-year old daughter, and of course my fans. I am going to put on a show that the fans deserve!”
